Leonardo da Vinci's Annunciation, created circa 1472–1476, is an early renaissance religious painting and Leonardo's earliest major surviving work. Painted in Florence during his apprenticeship in Andrea del Verrocchio's studio, it features a large panel with delicate use of oil and tempera. The work depicts the biblical scene of the Annunciation, a popular subject in 15th-century Florence, and remains one of the most well-known portrayals of this theme despite some compositional criticisms. Since 1867, it has been housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, where it continues to inspire.
