Recognized as Lotto's last surviving autograph work, it reflects the influence of the High renaissance style. Lotto, who had become an oblate at Loreto, likely planned a series of scenes from Christ's childhood, with this painting representing his final contribution. The composition captures the solemnity and spiritual significance of the event with vibrant detail and devotional depth, characteristic of Lotto’s distinctive style within the context of Renaissance religious art.
