The Marriage of the Virgin, also known as Lo Sposalizio, is a notable religious painting by Raphael, created in 1504 during the High renaissance. This Oil painting was originally commissioned for the Franciscan church of San Francesco in Città di Castello. Executed on a Panel, it depicts the marriage ceremony of Mary and Joseph with elegant symmetry and perspective. After changing hands several times, it has since been housed at the Pinacoteca di Brera since 1806. The work exemplifies Raphael’s mastery in capturing biblical themes with harmony and grace characteristic of the High renaissance.
