The painting, Annunciation, is a late work of El Greco created circa 1609 on canvas using oil paints. It depicts the biblical story of the Annunciation, making it a notable piece of religious painting during the Mannerist period of the late Renaissance. The painting resides in a private collection in Madrid. It is believed to be completed or possibly modified by his son after El Greco's death in 1614. The canvas is actually a fragment, part of the larger Doña María de Aragón Altarpiece, designed for the Hospital de Tavera chapel.
