Mother and Child
"Mother and Child," an oil-on-wood painting by Dutch artist Jan Steen, exemplifies genre painting within the Baroque tradition. Created around 1668–1670 and housed in the Mauritshuis, it humorously depicts three generations of a Dutch family during a holiday scene, serving as an allegory about parental influence, vice, and example — echoing the Dutch proverb "As the Old Sing, So Pipe the Young." Steiner painted this subject multiple times, and this version is considered the most exemplary. Its vibrant depiction emphasizes familial bonds and societal morals, using rich wood-panel techniques characteristic of the period’s dynamic style.
