"Saint Peter" by Titian (1516-1518) is a remarkable example of High renaissance religious painting. Originally created as an oil on canvas, it showcases Titian’s mastery of color, composition, and dramatic storytelling. The dynamic vertical composition emphasizes the emotional intensity of Saint Peter's martyrdom. As a pioneering large altarpiece measuring approximately 500 x 306 cm, it exemplifies Titian’s innovative approach to scale and expression in religious art of the High renaissance era. Although the original was destroyed in 1867, a 1691 copy by Johann Carl Loth preserves its powerful influence.
