"Atropos (The Fates)" is one of fourteen Black Paintings produced by Francisco de Goya during the period of 1819-1823, characterized by elements of Romanticism. Produced during a period of mental and physical despair, Goya utilized oil directly onto the plaster walls of his residence, Quinta del Sordo. This bleak, haunting composition is regarded as a mythological painting, and, while it was later transferred to a canvas, the original execution directly onto the walls endows it with a raw, evocative intensity.
