The painting titled 'Studies for "The Last Judgement"' is a compilation of sketch and study pieces used by Michelangelo before executing his renowned fresco in the Sistine Chapel. This conglomeration of over 300 figures that depict the Second Coming of Christ is a supreme example of Mannerism (late renaissance). The studies, most likely drawn on paper using chalk, conceive rough outlines and anticipated poses of many of the fresco's characters, exhibiting the master's initial vision for the monumental piece. These undraped male figures and angels eventually adorned the altar wall, with some still retaining draperies following restoration.
