'Schubert at the Piano I', an oil-on-canvas portrait painted by Gustav Klimt in 1899, portrays Austrian composer Franz Schubert immersed in a performance. The painting exhibits Schubert in the gentle light of candles, seated at a piano amidst a captivated audience. Klimt demonstrates his flair for Art Nouveau, a style characterized by organic shapes and fluid lines, and he imbued the painting with symbolism that hints at Schubert's musical genius. Commissioned originally by Nikolaus Dumba, the oil-based artwork was tragically destroyed in the Schloss Immendorf fire in 1945, and now survives only in photographic form.
