The Nativity
El Greco's "Nativity" is a stunning example of a religious painting from the era of Mannerism (late renaissance). Painted between 1603-1605, this piece specifically portrays the birth of Jesus. El Greco's work is characterized by his exceptional use of oil on canvas, resulting in rich, dramatic scenes. The "Nativity" was among a set of five paintings commissioned for the high altarpiece of the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Caridad, in Illescas, Toledo. Today, the majority of these remain in their original location, while one can be found in the National Museum of Art of Romania.
