"The Bathers" is an iconic oil-on-canvas artwork by Gustave Courbet that exemplifies the principles of Realism. First displayed at the Paris Salon of 1853, this controversial piece featured a large nude woman engaging in the age-old practice of bathing, a theme common in Nude painting (nu). This bold depiction defied the then-accepted artistic canons, drawing widespread criticism from conservative art critics. Today, it resides in the musée Fabre in Montpellier, having been purchased for 3000 francs by art collector Alfred Bruyas, which enabled Courbet to secure both financial and artistic independence.
