The Disrobing of Christ
"The Disrobing of Christ" or "El Expolio" is one of El Greco's most renowned works. Initiated in the summer of 1577, the religious painting was completed in Spring 1579 on a canvas using oil. The painting, highlighting the late renaissance elements of Mannerism, currently resides in the sacristy of the Cathedral of Toledo. In 2013, after undergoing conservation and cleaning work, it was temporarily exhibited at the Prado in Madrid, before returning to Toledo in 2014. El Greco's presence in Spain was first recorded in a document dated July 2, 1577, referring to this painting.
