Saint John the Evangelist
'Saint John the Evangelist' is a remarkable c. 1605 religious painting by El Greco, reflecting his mature style during his last years in Toledo, Spain. The work, which is now on display in the Museo del Prado, is notable for its depiction of the saint as a fervorous scholar, seemingly in trance-like contemplation. Left to the museum in 1921 by collector César Cabañas Caballero, the painting embodies El Greco's signature style, marked by elongated figures and dramatic intensity that are hallmarks of Mannerism (late renaissance).
