"Dormition of the Virgin" is a religious painting by celebrated artist El Greco, done using tempera on a panel. This masterpiece was created during his Cretan period, before 1567, and represents an important transition towards Mannerism, a stylistic phase of late renaissance art. The discovery of El Greco's signature on this work in 1983 led to a wider acceptance of other paintings as authentic works by the same artist, changing the comparitative understanding of his oeuvre.
