"Max Jacob" is an oil painting on canvas by Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, renowned for his unique, modern style. This specific portrait, created during his time in France, is exemplary of Modigliani's distinct approach to portraiture – featuring surreal elongations of the subject's face and neck, reminiscent of the classical antiquity and Renaissance art he studied in his youth. As with most of his works, the blend of surrealism and expressionistic techniques did not garner much acclaim during his lifetime, but is now highly coveted. Like Picasso, one of his contemporaries, Modigliani's work exhibited clear influences from the Cubists of the Section d'Or group.
