Catfish

The painting titled Catfish vividly captures the enigmatic presence of Vandellia cirrhosa, a parasitic freshwater catfish native to the Amazon basin, known for its notorious reputation as the candiru or vampire fish. Rendered in a style reminiscent of Naïve art (primitivism), it employs simple yet evocative brushstrokes that emphasize the creature's eerie, almost primal nature. As an animal painting, the work highlights the fascinating and sometimes unsettling aspects of aquatic life in South America. The image invites viewers to explore the mysterious world of these unique fish species with an air of naive honesty.
