The "Flagellation of Christ," part of the Herrenberg Altarpiece created between 1518 and 1521, exemplifies the Northern renaissance emphasis on detailed and expressive religious painting. Crafted from wood and initially painted with tempera and oil paints, it depicts the brutal scene of Christ's flagellation with intense emotion. As a high altar for the collegiate church in Herrenberg, it served the Brethren of the Common Life community. Today, the surviving panels are housed in the Stuttgart State Gallery, representing a masterful work of religious art from this period.
