A couple

The painting titled 'A couple' is a vivid example of ukiyo-e art, specifically within the tradition of shunga—erotic imagery that celebrates intimacy and desire. As a form of genre painting, it combines aesthetic beauty with playful, often explicit, depictions of lovers. While most shunga were created as woodblock prints, some rare handscrolls also exist, predating ukiyo-e. The artwork captures a tender and sensual moment, reflecting the cultural significance of sex as an integral part of human experience and art in historical Japan.
