"Hay Stacks" by the Macchiaioli captures a serene Landscape scene painted outdoors, emphasizing natural light, shade, and vibrant color. The Macchiaioli, active in Tuscany during the second half of the nineteenth century, broke away from traditional art academy conventions, focusing instead on plein air painting to depict everyday rural life. Although they predate and share similarities with the Impressionism, their aim was different—paying close attention to the effects of light and shadow through bold "macchie" or patches of color. Notable artists like Giovanni Fattori and Silvestro Lega pioneered this innovative approach, which remains influential today.
