The painting titled Portrait by Fransiskus Xaverius Basuki Abdullah exemplifies his mastery of Realism. An accomplished Indonesian painter and convert to Roman Catholicism from Islam, Abdullah's work is celebrated for its detailed representation and sensitive portrayal of subjects. Trained in The Hague, he gained international recognition, notably winning a contest during Queen Juliana's accession in the Netherlands. His prominence allowed him to paint the official portrait of President Suharto. Tragically, Abdullah's life ended violently when he was beaten during a home break-in in Jakarta.
