"Diana Surprised" is an 1879 oil painting by Jules Joseph Lefebvre that exemplifies Academicism through its detailed and realistic rendering. It depicts the mythological figure Diana and her attendants caught by surprise as they attempt to cover themselves during a bath. This mythological painting captures a moment of vulnerability, illustrating Lefebvre’s mastery in portraying the human form with sensitivity. Although he felt it was unfinished for the 1878 Exposition Universelle, it was showcased at the 1879 Salon at the Louvre in Paris. Today, it is part of the collection at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Argentina.
