"Shadows" by Franklin Carmichael captures the essence of Ontario’s landscape through his masterful use of watercolours and other media, such as oil paints and charcoal. As a member of the Group of Seven, Carmichael aimed to depict Canada's natural beauty with a sense of harmony and depth. His work reveals an appreciation for the organic forms often found in Art nouveau (modern) style, subtly blending natural elements with structured composition. Beyond painting, he contributed as a designer and illustrator, teaching at the Ontario College of Art, which enriched his artistic perspective in capturing the timeless qualities of the Ontario landscape.
