"Forbidden Land," originally titled L´upyre, is a Surrealist oil painting by Wolfgang Paalen completed in 1937. It depicts a stylized, drop-shaped idol of femininity with tentacle-like arms, precariously positioned near an unexpected abyss rendered in dark-crystalline forms. Three spherical landscape bodies hover before the figure, two resembling burning meteorites in descent. As Paalen's first oil work employing his signature fumage technique, the piece explores primordial femininity and mortal fears through hermetical iconography. Currently in a private collection, the painting exemplifies his mastery in blending dreamlike symbolism with surreal technique.
