"Canticle" by Mark Tobey exemplifies his densely structured Abstract compositions inspired by Asian calligraphy. Though resembling Abstract expressionism, Tobey’s motives are rooted in philosophy and Eastern religions, setting his work apart from most of his peers. His intricate brushstrokes and patterns evoke a spiritual harmony and are often created on Paper. Tobey, a founder of the Northwest School along with Guy Anderson and Morris Graves, was largely self-taught and influenced by Eastern thought, which is reflected in his meditative and structured abstract works like "Canticle."
