The Judgement of Cambyses is a compelling oil-on-panel diptych by Early Netherlandish artist Gerard David, exemplifying Northern renaissance artistic traditions. It depicts the biblical and historic scene where King Cambyses orders the arrest and flaying of the corrupt Persian judge Sisamnes, based on Herodotus' Histories. This religious painting conveys moral lessons and justice. Commissioned in 1487/1488 by Bruges' municipal authorities, it was designed as part of a series for the deputy burgomaster's room in the town hall, emphasizing civic virtue and morality through detailed panels.
