Sir Joshua Reynolds's 1780 Self-portrait is a compelling example of oil on canvas that reflects his mastery as a leading portraitist. Completed during his tenure as President of the Royal Academy, Reynolds depicts himself wearing the robes of the Doctorate of Civil Law, awarded by Oxford University in 1773. The pose echoes Rembrandt's stance, possibly inspired by Baroque artistic conventions. Next to him is a bust of Michelangelo by Daniele da Volterra, adding classical gravitas to the composition. The portrait showcases Reynolds's keen sense of self-awareness and artistic significance.
