The Vision of the Young Bartholomew

"The Vision of the Young Bartholomew" by Mikhail Vasilyevich Nesterov is a remarkable example of religious painting that embodies the principles of Symbolism. Nesterov, a Russian and Soviet artist associated with the Peredvizhniki and Mir iskusstva, was among the first to explore Symbolist themes in Russia. The painting depicts a mystical vision experienced by the young disciple Bartholomew, emphasizing spiritual awakening and divine inspiration. With its ethereal quality and symbolic depth, the work exemplifies Nesterov's mastery in blending religious subject matter with the poetic, mystical sensibilities characteristic of Symbolism.
