"The dream of the architect" is an oil painting created in 1840 by Thomas Cole for architect Ithiel Town. The canvas depicts a fantastical cityscape that combines architectural elements from Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Gothic styles, reflecting Cole’s interest in architecture and his Romanticism influences. The painting embodies visionary imagination and awe-inspiring grandeur, reminiscent of Romanticism. Despite its intricate detail and creative vision, Town disliked its almost exclusively architectural subject and refused to accept it. Cole completed the work in only five weeks and exhibited it publicly, but the painting remained with him until his death.
