The Portrait of Gerda is an evocative 1913 oil-on-canvas painting by German Expressionism artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. It portrays Erna Schilling, a Berlin nightclub dancer and Kirchner’s close friend and eventual partner. The painting captures her enigmatic expression and striking presence, characteristic of Kirchner’s bold brushwork and vivid colors. Notably, his signature, EL Kirchner, decorates the top left corner. Since 1989, the artwork has been part of the collection at the National Gallery in Berlin.
