"To Stanczyk," painted by Jan Matejko in 1862, is a powerful example of a genre painting that captures the contemplative expression of the famous Polish jester, Stańczyk. The work embodies elements of Romanticism through its emotional depth and nationalistic undertones, reflecting Poland's turbulent history. Acquired by the National Museum in Warsaw in 1924, the painting endured looting during World War II, when it was stolen by the Nazis, later seized by the Soviet Union, and finally returned to Poland around 1956.
