The portrait of Casimir the Restorer depicts the 11th-century duke of Poland, a member of the Piast dynasty renowned for reunifying fragmented parts of the kingdom after a period of turmoil. Son of Mieszko II Lambert and Richeza of Lotharingia, Casimir successfully reincorporated Masovia and conquered Silesia and Pomerania, earning his epithet. Despite his military successes, he was unable to crown himself King of Poland due to internal and external threats. The painting, possibly crafted during the Romanticism movement, captures his heroic image as a restorer of Polish unity.
