"Christ Washing the Feet of the Disciples" was a favored religious painting theme by Tintoretto, who created at least six known works on the subject. Inspired by the passage in John 13, it depicts Christ humbly washing his disciples' feet before the Last Supper. Tintoretto’s complex compositions required capturing numerous figures in dynamic poses and motions, showcasing his mastery of Mannerism (late renaissance). These powerful scenes were commissioned for various churches in Venice, often executed on canvas using oil paints, allowing for vivid colors and detailed expression. Since then, four of these works have left Italy, but they remain exemplary of Tintoretto’s skill in combining religious narrative with dramatic human emotion.
