"Maskerade" is an oil on panel painting by Antoine Watteau, a master of Rococo style, housed in the Hermitage Museum. Created in the 1710s, it depicts five figures—two women, two men, and a black boy—set against a dark background, combining elements of portraiture and genre painting. Uncharacteristic of Watteau’s usual fêtes galantes, the compact canvas exemplifies his influence from Venetian school, the Le Nain brothers, and Claude Gillot. The scene offers a rare, intimate glimpse into theatrical attire and social interaction of the period.
