"The Doomed City" is inspired by a Mythological painting by Nicholas Roerich, known for its gloomy beauty and profound sense of Symbolism. The artwork radiates an atmosphere of despair and hopelessness, which the authors Arkady and Boris Strugatsky vividly capture in their 1972 science fiction novel. Although unrelated to their other works in the Noon Universe, the painting’s surreal and mythic qualities influence the novel’s tone. Its evocative imagery of a ruined, forsaken city deepens the narrative’s themes of decay and existential dread, reflecting the Surrealism aesthetic that underpins much of its symbolism.
