Fishing by Torchlight in Kai Province, from Oceans of Wisdom

"Fishing by Torchlight in Kai Province," from the Oceans of Wisdom series by Hokusai, exemplifies the artist’s mastery of ukiyo-e woodblock prints. This rare set features ten fishing-themed works created around 1832–1834, highlighting scenes filled with dynamic movement and atmospheric effects. The print captures fishermen illuminated by torchlight, contrasting natural and human activity in a way reminiscent of genre painting, which emphasizes everyday life. Despite its short publication span, this series reflects Hokusai’s innovative approach, and some preparatory drawings reveal ideas for prints that were never realized.
