"Yurei" is a haunting Ukiyo-e woodblock print from Katsushika Hokusai's One Hundred Ghost Stories series, created around 1830 when he was in his seventies. This series, rooted in the Edo period’s superstitions, depicts scenes from popular ghost stories told during gatherings like Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai. Although only five prints survive, Hokusai’s work in this genre demonstrates his interest in mythological painting and supernatural themes, contrasting his landscape works. "Yurei" captures the eerie atmosphere of Edo myth and folklore, blending traditional mythological motifs with the characteristic style of ukiyo-e.
