Located in the Cathedral of Our Lady, Antwerp, it exemplifies Rubens’ mastery of oil paint and dynamic composition. As a Religious painting, it depicts the poignant moment when Christ's body is taken down from the cross after his crucifixion. This subject was a recurring theme in Rubens' work, and the painting remains a celebrated masterpiece of the Baroque era. It was commissioned by the Confraternity of the Arquebusiers, whose patron saint was St. Christopher.
