"Woman Reading" is an 1895 oil-on-board painting by French artist Henri Matisse, exemplifying genre painting with its intimate depiction of everyday life. The artwork portrays a woman dressed in black, seated in a cluttered room, absorbed in her book with her back to the viewer, evoking a sense of calmness and introspection. Matisse subtly includes a self-portrait through a framed drawing on the wall at the upper left. Although influenced by Expressionism in its use of bold, vibrant colors and emotional depth, the piece also reflects his evolving style before embracing Fauvism. It is currently housed at the Musée Matisse in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, on loan from the Centre Pompidou since 2002.
