Created on a canvas, this genre painting depicts a family enjoying a day at the races, capturing a candid, lively scene. Degas’ delicate brushwork and focus on everyday life reflect the immediacy and spontaneity of Impressionism, and the painting was notably shown at the First Impressionist Exhibition in 1874.
