"The Annunciation" by Hans Memling is a masterful religious painting from the Northern renaissance, created in the 1480s. This wood panel, later transferred to canvas after 1928, depicts the angel Gabriel's divine announcement to the Virgin Mary that she will conceive Jesus, based on the Gospel of Luke. Memling's exquisite use of oil paint enhances the detailed figures and rich symbolism characteristic of the period. Today, it's housed in the Robert Lehman collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
