The Marriage of St. Catherine by Hans Memling, created around 1479, is a quintessential example of Northern renaissance art. This religious painting depicts the Virgin Mary seated on a throne in a lush garden, holding the Child Jesus, flanked by angels playing musical instruments. St. Catherine of Alexandria appears on the left, opposite St. Barbara on the right. Executed in oil on oak panel rather than canvas, the work reflects Memling’s delicate detail and devotional focus, including a donor portrait of the male patron who commissioned the piece.
