"Sketch of a Hen" by Vincent van Gogh exemplifies his practice of creating sketch and study works by replicating and transforming pieces from other artists, particularly those inspired by Realism and Jean-François Millet. While at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, during the cold winter months, Van Gogh sought artistic renewal through over 30 copies, including this piece. Using paper and chalk, he translated Millet’s composition through his unique color and technique, infusing spiritual meaning and emotional comfort. As one of his many masterful copies, the work highlights van Gogh’s blend of appropriation and personal expression.
