"Ruins of Montmajour" is a captivating oil landscape painted by Vincent van Gogh on 4 July 1888, during his time in Arles, France. The artwork depicts a rugged garrigue landscape with the ancient ruins of Montmajour Abbey in the distance, capturing the essence of Post-impressionism. Although it was initially dismissed as a forgery and kept in a Norwegian industrialist's private collection for over a century, recent re-examination confirmed its authenticity. Van Gogh often began with pencil sketches and sketches and studies on paper, sometimes adding ink details before creating the oil masterpiece.
