The 'Nude Maja' is a significant piece of Romanticism, created between 1797-1800 by renowned Spanish artist Francisco de Goya. An example of the nude painting (nu) genre, it prominently features a maja, a fashionable woman of lower-class Madrid, lying unclothed against an array of pillows. The piece was commissioned by Manuel de Godoy and was painted with oil on canvas. A corresponding piece by Goya, depicting the same woman in an identical pose but clad in attire – 'La maja vestida' – is hung alongside the 'Nude Maja' in Museo del Prado, Madrid.
