'Landscape' is an iconic piece by prolific French painter Jean Désiré Gustave Courbet. Famed for his leadership in 19th-century Realism movement, Courbet's steadfast commitment to paint what he could perceive estranged him from prevailing academic conventions and Romanticism that typified the art of his contemporaries. 'Landscape' reflects Courbet's penchant for honest depiction, resplendent in its faithful rendition of nature. Courbet’s art, including 'Landscape', charted a unique, independent path. In doing so he laid a pivotal foundation for the later movements such as the Impressionism and Cubism, making important social statements through his work.
