Portrait of the Artist's Parents

The Portrait of the artist's parents by Philipp Otto Runge exemplifies his mastery of oil painting within the German Romanticism movement. Runge’s work often integrates rich symbolism and allegories, seeking to convey spiritual and philosophical ideals. This particular portrait reflects his interest in expressing contemporary philosophy through art, moving away from traditional Christian iconography. As a pivotal figure alongside Caspar David Friedrich, Runge's innovative approach aimed to embody deeper spiritual values and integral symbolism, aligning with his broader artistic and theoretical pursuits in color and landscape art.
