A House with a Flag

Werner Berg's 1961 painting, A House with a Flag, exemplifies his engagement with Expressionism, characterized by bold brushwork and vivid color contrasts that evoke emotional intensity. The artwork captures an architectural subject, focusing on the silhouette of a house prominently displaying a flag, situating the piece within the genre of urban Cityscape. Berg’s technique combines structured forms with expressive distortions, emphasizing the dynamic interaction between built environments and symbolic elements. This painting reflects the mid-20th-century modernist explorations of identity and place through the lens of personal and national symbolism.
