"Saint James the Less" is a 1609 piece by El Greco, created in the latter portion of the painter's time in Toledo. It's prominently displayed in the city's cathedral. As a classic example of religious painting, it portrays the titular saint, clutching a book, in a set that also includes Saint John the Evangelist and various other apostolic figures. This ensemble was commissioned by cardinal Bernardo de Sandoval y Rojas. El Greco's style reflects the elements of Mannerism (late renaissance), characterized by exaggerated and elongated figures. Crafted meticulously with oil on canvas, this piece stands as a testament to the artist's distinct aesthetic.
