Winter Landscape

Hendrick Avercamp's Winter Landscape with Skaters, created around 1608, is a vibrant example of early Dutch Landscape painting. This Oil-on-oak artwork captures a lively winter scene, filled with local residents enjoying outdoor activities on a frozen canal. The composition reflects the dynamic Baroque interest in movement and everyday life, rendered with detailed brushwork and rich colour. Avercamp’s masterful use of Oil paint brings warmth and liveliness to the cold, wintry setting, making it a quintessential piece in the Rijksmuseum’s collection of Dutch history and genre scenes.
