Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin's 'Watering Place' is a classic example of Genre painting. The French artist masterfully employed oil on canvas to depict an idyllic rural scene that bears the distinct stylistic imprint of the Post-Impressionist and Symbolist movements. Despite Gauguin's moderate success in life, his revolutionary application of color and use of the Synthetist style set him apart from his contemporaries in the Impressionism movement. The 'Watering Place' is but a small testament to the unique, experimental techniques that have since earned Gauguin recognition as a pillar of modern art.
